We put this in our dog's water and it helps immensely. Makes a really big difference, but you HAVE to use it every single day. It totally prevents plaque buildup on his teeth. After a teeth cleaning it used to take only about a month before his teeth began looking dirty (and he does NOT do well to having his teeth brushed), but since we've been using the Aquadent, his teeth look clean and it's been 10 months since his last teeth cleaning. I tasted the stuff just to see what he's drinking, and it's completely tasteless and odorless. Just follow the directions carefully so you don't overdose your dog on the chemicals. By the way, we originally began using the Aquadent when my dog's teeth were already dirty. The Aquadent prevented more plaque buildup, but it did not really make his teeth cleaner. Then, when we had his teeth cleaned, and we continued using the Aquadent, it has totally prevented his teeth from building up plaque. Best to start with a clean slate. Apparently, cats... In July 2004, ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center issued a xylitol warning. ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center managed about 70 cases involving xylitol-containing products in 2004, more than 170 cases in 2005 and about 114 cases from January to August 2006. Some of the pets died.According to Dr. Eric Dunayer, veterinarian and toxicologist for the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, dogs ingesting significant amounts of items sweetened with xylitol could develop a fairly sudden drop in blood sugar, resulting in depression, loss of coordination and seizures. "These signs can develop quite rapidly, at times less than 30 minutes after ingestion of the product. Therefore, it is crucial that pet owners seek veterinary treatment immediately." Please, for the sake of your pets, read labels and disclaimers carefully before administering this medication and refer to aspca.org for further information. Personally, I will not take this risk. 28 of 32 people found the following review helpful Can't justify the risk, By jsangio "gate-scapes" (St. Augustine, FL United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: CET AquaDent 500mL (Misc.) It is with regret and after a valiant attempt that I've decided to not purchase this product again and have gone with a competitive water additive. I called the manufacturer to ask if they had a similar product without xylitol or had plans to produce this without xylitol or even what the purpose of adding xylitol (sweetener) was outside of flavor and the repetitive response was no, the amount of xylitol was very small. So sorry, the tartar removing aspect of this product is very good but I can't knowingly add toxins to my dogs' water in any amount outside of what is probably already unknowingly there. I have dogs ranging in weight from 20 to 100 lbs and used the smallest recommended amount but can't fathom a manufacturer including toxins of any sort. Maybe it won't hurt my dogs but I'm not taking the chance. And I'm now scrutinizing ALL Virbac products I use and researching replacements since losing confidence in their intentions. My recommendation would have been to just take... Read more |
